Abstract
Peer-Reviewed Open AccessThe Irular community is one of the recognized tribal groups in Tamil Nadu, traditionally known for their close association with forests, indigenous knowledge and agricultural labor practices. This mini review focuses on the current status of the Irular community in Thiruvallur district, highlighting their socioeconomic conditions, health status, educational challenges, occupational patterns and living environment. Data from population continues to experience social marginalization, poverty, limited access to healthcare, low literacy rates and inadequate sanitation facilities. Although several welfare schemes and tribal development programs have been introduced by the government, the benefits often remain insufficient due to lack of awareness, poor implementation and social exclusion. The review also discusses the gradual transition in livelihood patterns from traditional occupations to wage labor and urban-related employment. Furthermore, issues related to nutrition, women’s health, child development and access to education are briefly examined.
